Reports to: Digital Library Services Librarian Location: Twin Cities Work Hours: M-F, hours TBD Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This position provides basic quality control, metadata review, and digitization services for the Digital Library Services unit working on a number of projects. This work is done under the direction and supervision of DLS staff.

Typical Duties:

  • Perform quality control review of objects uploaded to our UMedia digital collections site .
  • Assist with metadata clean-up projects: cross-reference, edit, or correct basic descriptive metadata using supplied spreadsheets.
  • Document / track edits, maintaining constant communication with supervisor.
  • Digitize print and text-based materials using various scanning equipment.
  • Prepare material for shipping to external vendors.


    Qualifications

    Required:
    • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Ability to make independent decisions and also collaborate as part of a team
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills Preferred:
      • Experience handling archival, special collections, and other fragile materials
      • Experience creating and updating descriptive metadata for archival and special collections according to national and local best practices
      • Experience with ContentDM collections management system
      • Experience or familiarity working with different types of scanning equipment in a production environment
      • Experience or familiarity with photo editing software
      • Background in history, art history, information science, or other related discipline
      • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the benefits of diversity and inclusion throughout an organization

        Service Area Overview The Collections & Content Strategy service area provides leadership in the development, discovery, and long term stewardship of the University of Minnesota Libraries' wide-ranging collections. With over 7.7 million print volumes, and millions of electronic resources, the University of Minnesota Libraries' research collections address all current and emerging areas of study at the University. Our collections are amongst the largest in the country. C&CS directs and oversees the acquisition, licensing, description, and discovery of content to meet the needs of the University community and all those interested in our collections. We also facilitate access to resources held at our extensive network of partner libraries throughout the world. The C&CS service area also develops and stewards the technologies and systems that support the metadata, fulfillment, and discovery of our robust resources for both the Twin Cities campus and the system campus libraries. We provide digitization, management, and preservation of the Libraries' physical collections to ensure long-term, broad access to those resources in our possession. Our aim is to increase access to, and awareness of, unique resources for scholars throughout the world. We also provide services and expertise to campus content creators on our collections, intellectual property rights, and copyright information while advocating for sustainable models for scholarly communication and information sharing. We work collaboratively with Libraries staff across the University of Minnesota system, campus partners, and external partners to advance the mission of the Libraries and the University. Benefits
