About the Job
Description of Position
This position provides financial and accounting support for
University of Minnesota construction projects managed by Capital
Project Management and UConstruction Facilities Management. This
includes project set up and closeout, capitalization of assets and
buildings, reconciliation of subsidiary systems to the general
ledger, and providing customer service and reporting for various
customers.
Project Accounting (60%)
Set up projects in Tririga and Peoplesoft. Determine correct
accounting codes, proper account transfers, and accuracy of
charges. Process fund transfers in the University general ledger,
ensuring that funding is available and appropriate for project use.
Determine capitalization components of projects. Reconcile project
costs in subsidiary systems to general ledger, analyzing
discrepancies, determining the validity of transactions, and making
necessary corrections. Close out projects in a timely manner upon
completion. Follow up with Project Managers to resolve deficits or
determine a plan for resolution. Respond to staff and customer
requests for project accounting information.
Review all construction project spending activity to ensure
projects are properly being capitalized and project account strings
no longer needed are being timely inactivated in the University
General Ledger. Responsible for reviewing closed construction
project account strings for additional activity; ensure any
residual transactions on these account strings are accounted for
properly and fund balances are correct for these projects. Manage
the work of Project Accounting student.
Interface Processing and Reconciliation (20%)
Manage system interfaces between subsidiary project management
systems and the University general ledger, reconciling differences
between the systems determining the validity of transactions and
making necessary corrections. Manage Building Codes permit,
Classroom and Network technology expenses are accurately recorded
on Capital Projects and reconciled to the general ledger.
Reporting and Analysis (10%)
Prepare and analyze project reports, review project accounts for
spending and accuracy of data. Analyze financial information in the
subsidiary and general ledger systems. Produce ad hoc reports as
needed for Project Managers, AVPs, Directors, central accounting,
and other customers. Other reporting and analysis as needed to meet
departmental objectives. Prepare and submit the annual pollution
remediation reporting.
Grants Project Support (10%)
Serve as Project Accountant for grant projects, managing finances
for sponsored projects to include accounting, reconciliations,
auditing and approving or denying expenditures based on
requirements. Guide Project Managers and work with clients funding
the project on university process and policy to ensure accurate and
timely submission of authorized capital project expenses using
Grant funding.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or related field
* Two years professional accounting, finance, or related experience
or a combination of six years related education and work
experience.
* Experience and proficiency using spreadsheets, software systems,
and reporting software
* Experience using general ledger financial applications and
interpreting financial results.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal & written
* Demonstrated ability to provide strong customer support
Preferred Qualifications
* Four or more years of accounting experience
* Experience with University of Minnesota policies, procedures, and
accounting systems
* Demonstrated working knowledge of accounts receivable, accounts
payable, general ledger, budgeting, forecasting, cost and project
accounting
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with internal and external organizations, groups,
team leaders and members and individuals.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
* Demonstrated ability to interpret, present, and analyze
information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally
and by preparation of reports and other materials.
* Demonstrated ability to self-start and take initiative on
assignments.
* Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to use
good judgment in prioritizing multiple requests made while meeting
deadline objectives.
* Excellent communication skills, strong problem-solving abilities
with attention to detail.
